‘Sare jahan se achha Hindusitan hamaara,
Hum bulbulain hai iss ki yeh gulsitan hamara.’
These patriotic lines resonated through every moment of the 75th Independence Day Celebrations at The Brigade School @ Whitefield on 15th August 2021. The program started with the hoisting of our tricolor flag by our esteemed guest Mr. Manjunath, Security Manager accompanied by Mr. Cheria, Administrator. They were led into our beautiful green sports field with a guard of honor, led by our athletics teacher Mr. Nagesha GR. It was live-streamed to our eager students of Std 1 to 10 who stood with pride and sang our national anthem.
Our Principal Mrs. Reena Suresh addressed the staff and students and encouraged them to remember that India was, is, and always will be, a magnificent cultural melting pot. She explained what India means to the young citizens of our country, ‘The idea of a supreme, progressive and independent country stems from accepting your roots, appreciating your values, celebrating your culture and heritage.’
Celebrating our culture and heritage, the theme of the program was to showcase India’s lesser-known picturesque locations, monuments that are centuries old, and the heart of our motherland – its amazing people. The program line up started with the students of our school presenting a few interesting facts like the only center authorized to manufacture the Indian flag is Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangh in Dharwad, located in our charming state of Karnataka; that a Floating Post Office was inaugurated in 2011 found on the Dal Lake in Srinagar. Did you know that India has one thousand six hundred and fifty-two mother tongues and one hundred and twenty-two languages? These fun facts, interspersed throughout the program, highlighted that India’s unity lies in its diversity.
It said that the truest expression of a people is in its dance and music. To showcase the talent of our nation, the students at The Brigade Schools sang a medley of patriotic songs with lyrics like: Desh se hai pyar toh Har pal yeh kehna chahiye, Mein rahoon ya na rahoon Bharat yeh rehna chahiye. The students sang these songs in Sanskrit, Kannada, and Bengali, which moved the student body and staff watching the same.
The segment that followed was “Incredible India” and was introduced by Karthika Gadamsetty of Std 5. Images of the architectural wonders that have made Indians proud blazed across the screen. Siddhanth G of Std 4 described an eleventh-century stepwell, “Rani ki Vav” which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site while Vedant Raksha proudly presented information about India Gate.
The school organized a quiz for eighth-graders, and the names of the students who best exhibited their deep knowledge about our country were displayed. This was followed by an exciting quiz for the audience to answer questions about our nation. The expressions on the faces of our audience clearly expressed the enthusiasm with which they tried to answer the questions within ten seconds.
The program next showcased the amazing people of India. Akanksha Madabhushi introduced us to Jannat a proud young eco-warrior who with her father is on a mission to clean the Dal Lake. The audience gave their full attention to the presentations about Incredible Indians like Vandana Shiva a well-known physicist and social activist, or Ratan Tata the industrialist and philanthropist who proved that the Indian spirit can never be trampled under acts of terrorism when he reconstructed the Taj Hotel in Mumbai after it was nearly destroyed. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan the braveheart who saved as many as fourteen lives while sacrificing his life was remembered with pride.
The talented dancers of our school presented a fusion dance that instilled the fervour of patriotism in the audience. Advika Das of Std 6 in her Vote of Thanks reminded us through the words of Vallabh Bhai Patel that, ‘Every citizen of India must remember that… he is an Indian and he has every right in this country but with certain… duties.’
