Report of the Workshop on Printing of the Preamble
Date: 26/09/24

An insightful workshop designed to deepen students’ understanding of the creation of our Constitution and the values of the Indian Preamble was organised for those in grades VIII to XI.

The Keynote speaker was Mr. Vinay, an aeronautical engineer, and the founder of ‘Reclaim Constitution’. Vinay Kumar, the founder of the “Reclaim Constitution” project, aims to address the prevalent ignorance of constitutional values. It was to spread knowledge about the making of our constitution and instil its ideals among citizens to build a more conscious country.

The session was highly interactive. Questions on what are our rights? What is the importance of Flag Day? were the icebreakers. The speaker motivated the audience by explaining the struggles of India before and during the partition. Important facts on the Constitutional debates and the ideals of the preamble with emphasis on the need to include terms as Secularism were explained in great detail. Audio recordings of speeches & visuals of the makers of our constitution were shown with emphasis on women participants, an aspect which students found interesting.

Students were made aware that; the ‘Majestic’ bus stand of Bangalore city was an important historical site for hoisting the national flag as a symbol of unity in the struggle for independence. Patriotic videos of events such as the Quit India movement connected the audience emotionally. The role of Dr B. R. Ambedkar in the drafting of the Constitution was discussed with the students.

The venue was decorated with posters of illustrations within the constitution and the constituent assembly members’ insights which students enjoyed reading. A copy of the Constitution was displayed. The most exciting part of the session was a beautiful dance recital in Bharatanatyam form performed by Ms. Santoshi and her accomplice, it was a novel take on explaining the keywords of the preamble through body movements, it was indeed breathtaking.

The workshop ended with students participating in a hands-on activity – printing the preamble themselves, each one got a copy. Students were motivated to read the preamble aloud and vow to become better citizens of the country.
