The Brigade Schools Grade 4 to 8 Parent Orientation Programme – 2025-2026
Understanding Adolescence – Parent Session by Dr. Akila Sadasivan

On May 22, 2025, Dr. Akila Sadasivan, a seasoned clinical psychologist, addressed parents of Grades 4 to 8 on navigating adolescence. Drawing on over 20 years of experience, she began by inviting parents to share concerns—ranging from screen time and emotional changes to social discipline and communication gaps.

She explained that adolescence (ages 10–19) is a critical phase of emotional, physical, and psychological transformation. Dividing the session into four themes, Dr. Akila explored:

1. Peer Pressure – Recognising its positive and negative forms and building confidence to say no.
2. Body Shaming – Understanding its impact and promoting self-acceptance.
3. Respecting Boundaries – Teaching consent and digital responsibility.
4. Bullying – Identifying all types, including cyberbullying, and encouraging open dialogue.

She concluded by urging parents to guide with empathy, listen without judgment, and support their children through this delicate phase.

Dr. Akila concluded the session with a powerful message: “Adolescence is a tender yet transformative period. The child within is slowly stepping into adulthood. It is our responsibility—as parents, teachers, and society—to offer them support, understanding, and the right values. Let us listen more, judge less, and guide them with empathy.”
