The Brigade Schools – Grade 4 Mathematics Abacus Activity
Learning Large Numbers through the Abacus
Mathematics is an essential life skill, deeply connected to our everyday experiences. To make learning more engaging and meaningful, Grade 4 students explored the concept of large numbers using a seven-pronged abacus they crafted themselves.
The activity focused on helping students visualise seven-digit numbers using the Indian place value system. Teachers provided numbers, and students represented them by placing colour-coded beads on the corresponding prongs of the abacus. Each bead represented a specific place value, making the abstract concept of large numbers more concrete and accessible.
This hands-on approach not only strengthened their understanding of place values but also added an element of fun to the classroom. It was an innovative and enjoyable way to make mathematics come alive.
