Grade 2 Students Explore the World of Birds Through Creative Model-Making

Grade 2 students recently participated in an engaging and creative classroom activity designed to help them learn about birds and their unique characteristics. As part of the chapter on Birds, students created colourful bird models using a variety of recycled and waste materials, combining scientific learning with artistic expression.

Before beginning the activity, students revisited important concepts about birds, including their physical characteristics, body parts, and classification. This recap helped them connect their classroom learning with the hands-on project that followed.

Students brought outlines of birds of their choice and used materials such as old newspapers, coloured paper, used straws, bottle caps, small seeds, dry leaves, and pieces of cardboard to design vibrant bird models. They also used decorative items like coloured feathers, sequins, and glitter to enhance their creations.

The activity encouraged students to imagine different bird behaviour and habitats. Many created scenes depicting birds flying in the sky, resting on tree branches, building nests, or pecking for food. Through this exercise, students expressed their creativity by experimenting with different textures, colours, and materials.

Beyond creativity, the activity also highlighted the importance of recycling and reusing materials. It helped students understand how everyday waste items can be transformed into meaningful and beautiful creations. The project also supported the development of fine motor skills, teamwork, and environmental awareness.

Overall, the activity successfully blended science with art, making learning both fun and meaningful. By the end of the session, students not only showcased their imaginative bird models but also gained a deeper appreciation for birds and the importance of caring for the environment.
