Detection of Elements in the given Organic Sample by Lassaigne’s Test

Students were made to prepare Lassaigne’s extract (sodium fusion extract). Using the same, they were to analyse whether the sample contained nitrogen, sulphur or halogens. To one part, they added freshly prepared ferrous sulphate solution and ferric chloride solution to this addition of concentrated Hydrochloric acid dropwise was used. No change in colour indicated that nitrogen is absent. In the second part, students added acetic acid and lead acetate, and they got a black precipitate of lead sulphide, indicating the presence of sulphur in the sample. In the third part, they added sodium nitroprusside, which gave violet colouration, confirming the presence of only sulphur in the given sample.

The students enjoyed doing the activity and could develop the skill of identifying elements in the given organic sample.

The above activity effectively empowered the students to integrate their theory with practical and helped reinforce their concepts.
