Class: 7 – Biology: Nutrition in plants

Activity: To show that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis.

The students of class 7 are learning about nutrition in plants. They were taught that plants prepare their food using simple raw materials like carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight.

Students of Std 7 were excited to experimentin the Chemistry laboratory using a variegated leaf from a Croton plant. The leaf was bleached completely by boiling it in alcohol and the starch test was conducted using an iodine solution. Only the green part of the leaf turned blue-black when the iodine solution was added, and the non-green part did not turn blue-black.

Through this activity, students learnt that photosynthesis occurs only in the presence of chlorophyll, and starch is formed only in the green areas of the leaf.
