The Brigade School @ J P Nagar
Grades 9 and 11 Workshop on Financial Literacy
The workshop aimed to help students understand that financial literacy is a crucial life skill that everyone, especially students, should possess.
Mr. Sailesh Damani conducted the workshop. He has empowered individuals to take charge of their finances for over 15 years. His passion lies in educating others to make smart financial decisions, achieving their life goals, and ultimately attaining financial freedom.
The session began with an activity called 20 Bean Activity wherein every student was asked to allocate funds, in the form of beans, to various categories based on their importance in our lives. He then reviewed this with the students and taught them how to allocate funds wisely.
He elaborated on the various ways of saving one’s earnings and planning one’s finances at different stages of life. He spoke about how money is a finite source, making budgeting crucial. It’s better to know where your money should go rather than wondering where it went.
He also emphasised smart things to know and do, like saving early, using money wisely, cyber security, etc. He also explained in detail the difference between saving and investing. The power of compounding was very easily explained through an activity. He spoke about how insurance is not an investment and how people are unaware of this. Students were kept engaged at every stage, helping them to clarify their doubts.
The key takeaway from this session was financially literate students can make informed decisions about their finances. They understand the importance of saving for emergencies, investing for their future, and avoiding debt.
