Making a 3D model of Allotropes of Carbon
The grade 10 students were presented with the models of different allotropes of carbon in their Chemistry class.
Students learnt about the element carbon which occurs in different forms in nature with widely varying physical properties. This activity enabled the students to understand the allotropes of carbon, diamond and graphite, formed by carbon atoms with two different structures, tetrahedron and hexagon with different physical properties. Students made 3D models and understood the structural differences between the allotropes.
This activity empowered the students to understand why diamond is the hardest substance known.
