Grade 2 – Composite Science
Topic: Australia – Dot Art Activity
As part of the curriculum, Grade 2 students explored the continent of Australia, learning about its landscape, climate, culture, and unique heritage. To enrich their understanding, a Dot Art activity was conducted with the objective of introducing students to the traditional art form of Indigenous Australians.
During the activity, students created dot art using small dots made with ear buds and a variety of coloured paints. Through this technique, they designed pictures that told stories of the land, animals, and natural surroundings of Australia. Natural colours such as blue, red, yellow, brown, black, and white were used. Common images included the Australian flag, kangaroos, birds, and the iconic Sydney Opera House.
This hands-on activity helped students appreciate Australian Aboriginal art and culture in an engaging and meaningful way. The learning outcomes included the ability to identify dot art, recognise the colours and images used, and create a simple dot art picture independently.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the activity, which also encouraged creativity and self-expression. It provided a wonderful opportunity for students to learn while exploring their artistic talents.
