Grade 7 – Chemistry
Topic: Physical and Chemical Change – Activity: Crystallisation of Copper Sulphate
Students conducted an activity on the crystallisation of copper sulphate by preparing a hot, saturated blue solution of copper sulphate. Through this experiment, they observed the gradual formation of crystals as the solution cooled and the solvent slowly evaporated.
This activity helped students understand that crystallisation is a slow evaporation process used to obtain large, pure crystals of a solid. It also reinforced the concept that crystallisation is a physical change, as no new substance is formed and the properties of the original substance remain unchanged.
Overall, the activity provided a clear and practical demonstration of the concept, enhancing students’ understanding through hands-on learning.
