Grade: 9 – Subject: Biology – Topic: Tissue
Activity: Growing Apical Meristem In Onion.

The activity’s objective was to enable students to understand the role of apical meristem in onion roots.
The region of the cells capable of division and growth in the root and shoot tips in plants is called apical meristem. To understand this phenomenon, the students of grade 9 conducted an experiment using onions and water. The students used two onions: Set 1 was a control group and Set 2 was the experimental group. After growing the roots of the control and the experimental group for a few days, the experimental group’s roots were severed. It was noticed that the root’s length in the experimental group ceased to grow.
This investigation led them to the conclusion that the meristematic tissue called the apical meristem is in charge of the root’s increased length.
