Subject: Chemistry

Topic: Exploring mixtures and their separation

Activity 1: Scattering of light in colloidal solutions and suspensions.

Report: Students learnt about the scattering of light in milk solution (colloid) and sand solution (suspension). This activity enabled the students to understand that light scatters in milk solution and sand solution (only in the disturbed state).

The students could conclude that colloids scatter light as their particles are smaller and they remain suspended. Meanwhile, the particles in suspensions are heavier, and they settle down unless they are agitated. Students could relate the scattering of light to the phenomenon in daily life, i.e., the colour of the sky.
