SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth)
SPIC MACAY hosted a captivating flute recital on 12th February 2024. The accomplished flutist Dr. Pandit Pravin Godkhindi, accompanied by Shri. Kiran Godkhindi on the tabla took the audience into the magical world of classical music. Students from Std 7 & 8 across the three Brigade Schools were treated to an hour and a half of musical brilliance.
The session commenced with an informative introduction to various types of flutes, including the Indian folk flute, Bansuri, and the low bass flute, designed by Dr. Godkhindi. He described the materials used and the meticulous process of crafting the flute. Despite the flute’s simplicity, its tone quality relies on breathing techniques and hole placements.
Dr. Godkhindi demonstrated inhalation and exhalation techniques crucial for mastering breathless performances. He also explained the use of the tongue to create diverse sounds and staccato notes for speed. Introducing the basics of Indian classical music, he simplified concepts of notes, ragas, tala, and laya, highlighting that Indian classical music encompasses 12 notes despite the general knowledge of 7 notes.
The performance began with Raag Nat Bhairav, featuring an alaap accompanied by the tabla in the 16-beat cycle, teen taal. The music continued in Raag Mishra Pahadi, showcasing all three flutes. Dr. Godkhindi’s demonstration of circular breathing left the audience spellbound, enhanced by jugalbandi performances that delighted the students.
The recital concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where Dr. Godkhindi and Shri Kiran Godkhindi patiently answered students’ enthusiastic inquiries. Panditji was greeted with applause throughout the concert by students and teachers who enjoyed every minute of this musical.
