News & Events / Std 6: Young Scientists Explore at The Brigade Schools
category
Academics
Class: 6
Subject: Science (Chemistry)
Topic: Sorting materials into groups
Name of Activity: Solubility and miscibility
Objectives: To understand the solubility of substances
Importance of water as the universal solvent
Description of Activity:
The students of class 6 performed an activity to understand the solubility of various substances in water.
The students performed the solubility and miscibility test by using various materials like sand, crushed soap, talcum powder, chalk powder, sawdust, milk, coconut oil, kerosene oil, and shampoo. They added each of the above substances to water and observed that crushed soap was soluble in water. Therefore, it is called a ‘soluble substance.’ Whereas sawdust, chalk powder, and talcum powder were insoluble in water and known as ‘insoluble substances.’
Materials like milk and shampoo are miscible in water. Therefore, they are called miscible liquids. Coconut oil and kerosene oil are immiscible in water, and these are known as immiscible liquids. The students observed that water could dissolve most of the solutes. Therefore, they concluded that water is a universal solvent.
The activity helped reinforce the concept in the students.
