Date: Wednesday 31st July 2024
Class: Std 9 to 12
Venue: Auditorium, MLR Convention Centre
From the dawn of speech, debate has been the means to voice opinions and stimulate critical thinking. The Brigade School @ J.P. Nagar proudly hosted The Mind and Space Day, Symposium for Std 9 to 12 on Wednesday 31st July 2024. The Symposium, titled Reflexion … A Face-off is essentially a debate session. The symposium aimed to hone students’ public speaking skills and teach them to be articulate while expressing their thoughts and opinions aptly.
The first round of the event was a group discussion round. There were three groups comprising twelve to thirteen members each. The students of Std 9 to 12 battled out their logic and wits, exhibiting their prowess in public speaking. Out of this Group Discussion round, 6 best speakers were selected to exhibit their intellectual brilliance at the Symposium. Ezhilen S (Std 12A), Anikethan Suman (Std 12A) and Mukund Sai Chandrasekar (Std 12C) teamed up as the team speaking against the motion and Dhruv B Kumar (Std 12A), Advay Shenoy (Std 12A) and Tanish Thyagasankar (Std 11A) were geared up to speak for the motion.
This year’s topic for the Symposium, “Technology has alienated and isolated us, ” was a polarising one creating a chance for well-crafted arguments. Vishnu Iyer, an excellent speaker and an alumnus (2022 Std 12 pass out), moderated the debate.
Two teams, consisting of three members each, gracefully assumed the centre stage where one passionately argued in favour of the motion, while the other ardently opposed it, sparking a spirited debate. Following the compelling assertion from each team, a vibrant discussion ensued, illuminating different perspectives. The session was a kaleidoscope of opinions, thoughts and interpretations that enhanced the understanding of the topic. The amount of research work put in by the students was worth appreciation and opened new horizons before us.
The line of reasoning presented was acknowledged by the audience, consisting of parents, teachers, dignitaries and fellow schoolmates, with loud cheers. Some arguments even made the audience think about the validity of the information the general public had. A galore of talented speakers fought out the war of words with viewpoints being presented and proven with evidence and reason at every stage. A ten-minute rebuttal round followed the intriguing debate session. The discussion was thrown open and the debaters took apart each other’s arguments while defending their own, maintaining mutual respect and camaraderie.
After the fiery rebuttal round, the debate was thrown open to the audience who could ask questions. This served as a great way to involve non-participants and further show how well our debaters could think on their feet.
