Freedom.

A word habitually used by us in the 21st century seemed like a distant dream to our forefathers a hundred years ago. While we are lost in the trivial race of personal accomplishments, our country unanimously saw a vision. A vision to one day free their motherland from the clutches of the British.

After the brave sacrifices of young and old martyrs alike, our country came to be known as the “Republic Of India” on 15th August 1947.

Independence Day is celebrated every year to remind us that freedom never comes easily to anyone and to make us aware of the struggle that was behind making India a free country.

On this day, the Prime Minister of India visits India Gate to pay his respects to those millions of freedom fighters who selflessly accepted death with a smile on their face for the greater good. They died fighting the oppression, discrimination, and cruelty inflicted upon the Indian masses by the British. We will be forever grateful to them.

The Indian national flag was designed and presented to Mahatma Gandhi by Pingali Venkayya. He beautifully portrayed the different spirits of the nation using three colours.

While saffron represents glory, white is for peace, and green is for faith. The Ashoka Chakra in the middle of the flag signifies there is life in movement and death in stagnation.

I believe that we as a country should start seeing the invisible blood of our heroic martyrs splashed across our national flag and pledge to dedicate ourselves to the betterment of our motherland.

As we celebrate the 75th year of our country’s independence, let us remember, with gratitude, the sacrifice of our freedom fighters and those brave soldiers risking their lives every day at the border to ensure our safety.

Let us, with one accord take an oath to always stand for what is right and maintain peace and brotherhood in our nation.

Many died for this freedom and it is our duty as Indians to honour it.
Let us vow to preserve our motherland’s freedom.
