Unravelling Heritage: Andhra & Telangana Come Alive at The Brigade School @ Malleswaram
The Brigade School @ Malleswaram embarked on a cultural journey across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. On 14 November, the school celebrated Cultural Day for Grades 4–12 at the iconic Chowdiah Memorial Hall, presenting a spectacular showcase of dance, drama, music and regional art forms. The auditorium came alive with the intricate crafts, vibrant textiles and architectural splendour of the two states, offering a visual feast to the audience.
The programme began on a dignified note with a welcome speech by the students, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. The reading of the annual report by the Principal, Mr Georgekutty Joseph, and the vote of thanks by the coordinators marked the formal segment of the event. Skilled student compères seamlessly steered the audience into a celebration of the rich Telugu culture.
The musical segment featured a wide spectrum of songs — from soulful classics to high-energy beats — performed by the school’s exceptional band of vocalists and instrumentalists. A flamboyant fashion show transported the audience to the world of the Nizams, the elegance of the Pearl City and the colourful native attire of both states. Royal sherwanis and khada dupattas, vibrant tribal wear, multihued handlooms and contemporary silhouettes created a stunning blend of heritage and modernity. The energetic performance of ‘Bum Bum Bole’ added extra zest to the evening.
The spirit of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana came alive through lively dance forms such as Kuchipudi, Kolattam, Dhimsa, Bathukamma, Buttabommalu and Pulivesham, each capturing the rhythm, traditions and soul of the Telugu people.
A dramatic time-travel experience awaited the audience as the hilarious play ‘Tenali Rama’ transported them to the majestic Vijayanagara Empire under the reign of Krishnadevaraya. The comic enactment traced the transformation of Ramalinga into the legendary court jester, Tenali Rama, evoking laughter and admiration in equal measure.
The Evolution of Tollywood proved to be one of the highlights of the evening. Students presented a stunning retrospective of Telugu cinema — from the golden era of NTR and ANR, through the vibrant 90s to contemporary blockbuster beats. Mesmerising dance sequences and nostalgic music earned thunderous applause and repeated calls of ‘once more!’
The programme stood out as a remarkable blend of dedication, creativity and teamwork. A touching video titled ‘Behind the Scenes’ showcased the relentless efforts, patience and passion of students and teachers who designed props, crafted décor and coordinated rehearsals to perfection. Their collaborative spirit helped bring to life the theme for 2025–26 — Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: The Essence of Incredible India!
