Timothy Franklyn, the founder of the National School of Journalism and Public Discourse (NSoJ) in Bengaluru highlighted the significance of democracy and newspaper reading in the session on ‘Law, Media, Democracy, and You’ to the students grades 9,10 and 11 of The Brigade School, Malleswaram on 9th September 2024.
The event entitled, “Campus Talk” was organised by The Times of India (including a 45-minute presentation/ talk followed by a 15-minute Q&A session, covering topics such as the role of law and media in democratic societies, the value of active civic engagement, the crucial role of newspapers in informing citizens, and techniques for critically reading news articles.
Students were asked to introspect about their strengths and work on them, tap their potential, and utilise available resources; thereby creating a niche for themselves. The concept of social contract, significance of accessibility and accountability were elucidated. Students were given an overview of voting wisely and the importance of decision-making. Interaction in heterogeneous groups is imperative in a democratic set-up. The development of leadership skills is the need of the hour.
The interactive session offered valuable insights into law and media and emphasised the importance of staying informed and forming unbiased opinions through daily newspaper reading. It presented a unique opportunity for students to interact with experts and gain a deeper understanding of the foundations of democracy and the role of media in supporting them.
The session was relevant to students across all streams and underscored the importance of reading unbiased news. It aimed to highlight the significance of democracy and newspaper reading.
